Statue of Pythagoras
June 24-27, 2022
Highlights from a couple days on Samos Island, nestled by the soaring mountains of Turkey’s Ionian coast.
- Samos is the birthplace of philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras. Remember the Pythagorean Theorem from geometry class? It also boasts some remarkable feats of early engineering (1 km tunnel built 2500 years ago; first artificial port in the Mediterranean). This creates a strange juxtaposition of nerd tourism (e.g., math equations on T-shirts at local souvenir shops) and Aegean beach culture.
- Eve, Lily and Jacob swimming in the most crystal clear beach we’ve ever visited – Psili Ammos near Pythagorio. The name means “Fine Sand” and designates amazing beaches on various Aegean Islands.
- The first island we’ve visited that is not frequented by Brits. They were out in force on Rhodes and Patmos, but German, Dutch and Eastern European languages are more common in the streets here.
