My one day tour of Ephesus left me with about two hours to wander the Turkish beach town of Kuşadasi, home to 90,000 in winter but a half million in summer. The bazaars of the tourist area are packed with stalls selling rugs, ornamented plates and “genuine fake watches.” I ventured outside the tourist zone and saw a very different city, where poverty seemed more intense.
A kind young shopkeeper outside the tourist zone helped me find some real Turkish Delight in lieu of the prepackaged stuff in the bazaars. It was heavenly.
