After the crowds at Focus, it was a delight to be off in the woods near Inverness for a few days. The topography and outdoorsy ethos of Inverness reminded us of Vancouver Island more than anywhere else on our trip. Here are our few of our highlights in and around the Highlands:

  • Hiking the woods of Ord Hill and coming across the remains of an Iron Age fort. The thornbush thickets were dense and scratchy.
  • Hearing the melodic, soaring Scottish Traditional music of Assynt at an outdoor show at Eden Court. These lads were pros with incredible cohesion as a band and the best bagpiping I’ve ever heard.
  • Watching local kids catch crabs with ease near the old ferry dock in North Kessock
  • Exploring Sterling Castle on our way up to Inverness and the ruins of Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness.  We cast our eyes over the deep lake – which holds more fresh water than all the lakes of England and Wales combined – but Nessie was being shy.
