Last week was our first time in the Discovery Islands and we were quickly smitten by Quadra. The ten minute ferry ride from Campbell River was quick and easy with sailings every half hour; it could be the most convenient ferry crossing in all of BC.
Compared to the more bohemian Gulf islands further south, Quadra seems more grounded. It has stunning beaches and lush forests like the rest, but also an industrial park and a strip mall. So it’s more of a seaside extension of Campbell River than a hippie colony.
The island is also much more massive: it takes a full hour to drive tip to tip. The north end is all gravel roads, secluded parks, and RV homesteaders. Further south, the Rebecca Spit has to be one of the best walks in the province. The peninsula is so narrow that the beaches on either side come within metres of each other. And any way you turn is rimmed with majestic glacier-topped mountain ranges.
This is one island we look forward to visiting again.
