The Quiraing Walk on the Trotternish Peninsula

With dramatic cliffs, remote beaches, and more sheep than people, Scotland’s Isle of Skye is one of the most haunting places I’ve been. The weather in summer barely topped 15°C degrees, and showers or billowing fog could strike at any moment.
Portree, the wee capital of the Island, was a bit overrun with other travellers, but remote spaces were not too hard to find.
One nuisance was the midges – in some places the air was thick with these small mosquitoes. “If you kill one midge, a million more will come to his funeral.” The long hair on Hairy Coos is an adaptation to protect them from midge clouds. But in the end, this was a small annoyance compared with the rugged beauty of Skye and some of the best family hikes we’ve ever done.
